Hand Rearing Youngsters
Each summer, here in the U.K., temperatures are rising and remaining elevated over a number of weeks. Whilst my American Show Racers are kept in a cool loft, it is well ventilated so warm air does get in. I’ve not had this issue with my smaller (half the size) tipplers but two summers running I’ve h...

Feed supplements
My birds always have mixed grit and Versele-Laga All-In-One Vitamin & Mineral Mix in front of them. The latter looks to me like ground up red brick dust. It smells nice and, apparently, contains a spectrum of minerals. The birds seem addicted to this. Two things I’ve often wondered about but hav...

Re: Tippler x feral F1
Adam that’s an incredible comment. I’ve always thought so too.

Tippler x feral F1
This is an interesting little chap. I found his mum last year. She is a feral pigeon. I picked her off the street one February morning tipping down with rain and freezing. She was only recently fledged and just sat there with wings hanging and head down. Every body just walked on by. I thought she w...

Depth of ash…or is that red?
This is a feral pigeon I’ve seen a lot of. Always notice the beautiful ones that I’d like to take home.
I assume this is an ash of some sort. The depth and richness of red reminds me of the rufous modifiers in red agouti rabbit coat colour. Is this so in pigeons too?

Re: Crossbreeding idea
I’d be interested in hearing how this is going and your incremental goals. This sounds a great challenge but will take so much patience without losing sight of your intended outcome. How will you monitor it? How many pairs will you start with?

Been reading…really appreciate people who take the time to share their commitment and enthusiasm. Just wondering if there’s a st thread already here someplace. https://www.genetikaholubu.cz/media/newsletter/email_pigeon_genetics_newsletter_2017_11.pdf This reminds me (superficially) of the silver ge...

Re: Playing with colours
Years back I kept show rabbits and totally understood all of their coat colour genetics and I thoroughly enjoyed learning about it but pigeons are proving to be a bit too much. I’ll have a read a bit about stippers…never heard of that. Thanks Adam for the nudge towards the literature.

Re: Playing with colours
For me, the mention of opal gets me in confused mode. I’ve seen tiger grizzles, lovely birds, and I understand their phenotype changes with each moult. Thanks Adam. That’ll be a challenge putting this on an ASR.
