Playing with colours

Post by Johannes »

A dear friend of mine breeds unusual (rare) coloured racing pigeons. He knows what he’s doing but this hen turned up in one of his pairings. To me, an absolute stunner. Any one any thoughts please? I am unable to say what the parents’ genotypes are. It’s going into the breeding pen in the hope of replicating it.

Maybe a recessive opal spread tiger grizzle? Or a St allele perhaps.

For me, the mention of opal gets me in confused mode. I’ve seen tiger grizzles, lovely birds, and I understand their phenotype changes with each moult. Thanks Adam. That’ll be a challenge putting this on an ASR.

Stippers change each moult, tigers only change on the first.

Years back I kept show rabbits and totally understood all of their coat colour genetics and I thoroughly enjoyed learning about it but pigeons are proving to be a bit too much. I’ll have a read a bit about stippers…never heard of that. Thanks Adam for the nudge towards the literature.
